Two Formulations
APP vs. SBS Modified Bitumen
APP (atactic polypropylene) modifies the asphalt with a plastic. The result is a “plastic” membrane with excellent UV and heat resistance and a tough surface — well suited to hot, sun-drenched roofs. APP sheets are most often torch-applied.
SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) modifies the asphalt with a synthetic rubber. That makes an elastic, “rubberized” membrane that flexes and recovers as the building expands and contracts — excellent for handling movement and temperature swings. SBS can be torched, cold-applied, or self-adhered, giving it more installation flexibility.

How It Goes On

- Torch-applied. An open flame melts the underside of the sheet as it’s rolled out, fusing each ply into a fully bonded membrane. It creates a strong, watertight bond — and it demands experienced crews and strict fire-safety practices, which is exactly why it belongs in professional hands.
- Cold-applied. Sheets are set in a cold adhesive rather than heat, avoiding an open flame — a good fit for occupied buildings and roofs where torching isn’t practical.
- Self-adhered. “Peel-and-stick” sheets bond as the backing is removed, with no flame and no hot adhesive — the cleanest, lowest-risk method for sensitive sites.
